As a child, I thought my father was a magician. I imagined he placed a sheet of plastic over a patient’s face and lifted it away to reveal someone beautiful. That was my childhood explanation for plastic surgery. I had yet to discover the years of study, responsibility, and care behind it.
Today, after more than 8,000 procedures and more than 22 years of practice (today, by deliberate choice, 3 facelifts per week, ~150 per year), I aim to make that experience useful to each person I care for. I serve patients from all over Brazil and abroad, always with the commitment to deliver results that honor the identity of each person. My American patients often call me simply Dr. Z — a shorthand I happily answer to.

I was born in Cornélio Procópio, Paraná, while my father was training with Professor Ivo Pitanguy in Rio de Janeiro. I returned from Rio de Janeiro when I was two. After completing his training, my father established his practice in Londrina. Back then, he often had to begin by explaining what plastic surgery was.
I lost him when I was nine, following a car accident. The wish to continue the work he could no longer do stayed with me. I chose medical school and general surgery residency at the State University of Londrina, where I could pursue my training close to the family who had helped me through that loss.
When I joined Pitanguy’s plastic surgery residency, I met teachers who had known my father. Professor Pitanguy remembered him too, and we spoke about him several times. I felt at home. In my first year, I was one of two residents selected to work at his private clinic, alongside the training based at the 38th Ward of Santa Casa in Rio de Janeiro.
After residency, I was invited to stay on the team. Instead, I chose to return to Londrina and my family in 2004. Building my own practice in the city where my father had worked gave my career a deeply personal meaning.
Following his footsteps, finding my way
I continued learning in the United States and Canada. At an ASAPS meeting in Las Vegas in 2009, I first encountered facial fat grafting. Years later, in New Orleans, I saw refinements that convinced me to bring it into my practice. I have now been combining fat grafting with facelift surgery for more than ten years.
Tim Marten’s presentations influenced my approach to fat grafting; Mike Nayak’s helped deepen my study of the deep plane facelift. My foundation came from residency: I learned SMAS plication with Pitanguy and SMAS dissection while assisting Marcelo da Cunha Araújo. These were distinct learning experiences that shaped how I approach facial surgery.
A tendon injury in my right shoulder during liposuction also changed my direction. To protect my shoulder, I stopped performing body procedures that often involved hours of liposuction. I focused my practice on the face, nose, eyelids, and female intimate surgery, areas that already held a particular interest for me.

Every choice in facial surgery needs a reason
That experience leads me to assess support, volume, the neck, and the eyelids together. Deep plane and deep neck surgery address different structures; fat grafting can restore volume, and blepharoplasty addresses eyelid changes. Your assessment determines which steps are appropriate.
Introducing a technique has never meant simply following a trend. It means studying it, following its development, and understanding what it can add to patient care. When I discuss your plan, I explain its limitations and risks as well.

The same attention to the whole picture guides my rhinoplasty work. I want to understand what bothers you about your nose’s appearance and hear about your breathing. Both matter to an assessment that goes beyond a photograph.

Beyond borders: fluency in five languages
At Pitanguy’s clinic, I cared for patients from many countries. I already spoke Portuguese, English, Spanish, and French during residency; I learned Italian afterward. Working across languages taught me to listen to different stories and expectations. Today, I continue to welcome patients from Brazil and abroad in all five languages.
I regularly receive patients from the United States, Europe, Japan, and Latin American countries who choose Brazil as their medical tourism destination for cosmetic surgery. Direct communication, without translators, makes a difference: I can understand nuances, cultural expectations, specific fears. And the patient feels more secure knowing they will be understood.

Contribution to medicine: the Burn Center of Londrina
I also helped establish the Burn Center at the University Hospital of Londrina, where I had completed my general surgery residency. I worked there on Sundays. Eventually, I had to step away because my private practice left me without a day off. That contribution remains part of my connection to Londrina; today, my work is focused on my clinical and surgical practice.
My care continues after the operation ends
I operate at Hospital do Coração — Unidade Bela Suíça in Londrina. I visit my patients in the hospital on the evening of surgery and see them again the next day.
Follow-up visits take place at 1, 2, 7, 10, and 14 days; at 1, 2, and 6 months; and at one year. We also meet for the initial consultation and a preoperative visit. At each stage, I want you to understand the plan and have room to ask questions.
